Managing Hot Flashes is Most Important According to Surveys

by Patsy Hamilton

According to surveys, managing hot flashes is one of the biggest concerns that women have during the years leading up to and following menopause. Many women spend a lot of time and money trying to find effective help for hot flashes and sweating. Since, I am one of those women, I want to help women avoid at least some of the trial and error.

The need for managing hot flashes may show up in a womans late thirties. From my own experience, I can say that they have a tendency to get worse as menopause comes closer and that during the first few years, they have a tendency to come and go. Most women are only bothered by hot flashes for a couple of years following menopause. Some women never experience them at all. Some research suggests that the difference in severity of hot flash symptoms is genetic, but women who need help for hot flashes and sweating really dont care what causes them. They just want them to stop.

The first step that the better womens clinics recommend for managing hot flashes is related to lifestyle. Women who smoke have more symptoms of greater severity than women who do not. Likewise, women who drink a lot of caffeinated and/or alcoholic beverages have more symptoms. A symptoms diary can be helpful to determine what triggers hot flashes in individual women, since the triggers vary. For instance, some women have found that spicy foods can bring on hot flashes, but other women do not find that food is a factor.

Regular exercise is often recommended as help for hot flashes and sweating. Of course, physical exercise will increase sweating during the activity, but most women find that night sweats are less severe when they are physically active during the day. The connection is not clear, but it is probably because exercise increases levels of hormones and other feel good chemicals circulating in the bloodstream.

Certain plant components are effective for managing hot flashes. These have become increasingly popular, since the release of research that confirms the health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. Regular doses of equine estrogens are about 90% effective at managing hot flashes. Black cohosh, an herb, is even more effective for some women.

For more information about herbs and other plant components that provide help for hot flashes and sweating, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide.
